What is Lip Blush Treatment?

Lip Blush (also known as Lip Tattoo or Permanent Lipstick) is a professional cosmetic and aesthetic procedure that uses a machine similar to a tattoo machine to implant colour pigment (of the client’s choice) into the dermis of the lips, resulting in fuller and more defined looking lips.

Who Can Benefit From This Treatment?

  • Mothers and individuals with busy lifestyles who welcome time saving techniques
  • Women (or men) who lack lip definition or wish to camouflage any darkness on their lip
  • Clients who lack symmetry on their lips
  •  Disabled / partially sighted individuals who struggle with their makeup routine

Why Lip Blush?

  • As previously mentioned, Lip Blush saves time. You will no longer need to perfect your perfect pout as Lip Blush can last up to 5 years.
  • Saves aggravation of trying to perfect application, especially for clients who lack symmetry in their lips as the Artist can rectify small imperfections such as this.
  • Convenient. You will no longer need to spend time shopping for your perfect shade once your favourite lipstick has run out, especially when you discover they have discontinued your favourite shade and have to hang around in the store searching for the next best shade!
  • Smudge free. Your colour will stay where it belongs all day and night and will be one less thing to remove during your bedtime routine.
  • Long lasting. Your colour can be retained up to 5 years.
  • Long term investment. Negating the need to purchase regular lipstick is not only convenient, but also a saving. Of course the brand and price of your favourite lipstick needs to be considered, but it is highly likely that even at the cheaper lipstick price end, you will be making a long term investment, especially if like me, you misplace your lippy now and again. However, with that said, it should be noted that even though you will have a colour on your lips through Lip Blushing, you can still apply normal lipstick on top to boost your look (such as a darker shade for evening), but that of course is entirely up to you.

Is Lip Blush Permanent?

You will note that there are many Artists out there who refer to themselves as Permanent Makeup Artists and others who refer to themselves as Semi-Permanent Makeup Artist which ultimately can make you wonder if the procedure is permanent and you will have it forever, or semi-permanent where it will fade with time. In truth, both Artists are performing the same procedure which lasts the same time, however, the way they see the treatment is different. Permanent Makeup Artists take into consideration that any pigment deposited in the skin will remain in the skin unless professionally removed. The pigment will fade and may not be visible to the naked eye but in reality it is still there. Semi-Permanent Makeup Artists acknowledge that the pigment has faded to such an extent that they no longer consider it to be present within the skin as it can’t be seen, and therefore categorise the treatment as semi-permanent.

It is important to note that semi-permanent micropigmentation of eyebrows, lips and eyeliner use a different machine to traditional body tattoo machines that work on a much deeper level of the skin resulting in a permanent tattoo. This upper level of the dermis regenerates, therefore regular top up treatments are required to maintain the intensity of the colour.Depending on the aftercare, lifestyle and medical condition of the client, the colour can be retained from anything from 2 to 5 years.

Can You Eat After Lip Blush?

I do love my food! So this would be one of the biggest questions at the forefront of my mind! You are advised to avoid spicy food for up to 48 hours after the procedure as your lips are extra sensitive and you will experience a burning sensation.

Lip Blush Versus Filler

Lip Blush can be very effective in making lips ‘appear’ fuller and more defined, but it is a completely different procedure to Lip Filler and delivers very different results. When regular lipstick is applied, lips will look fuller and more defined, but don’t actually change in size. Lip Blush does exactly the same thing, only it doesn’t smudge or come off throughout the course of the day. Lip Filler however, involves injecting Collagen or Hyaluronic acid into the lips to increase volume and size. Again it is not a permanent procedure and lasts anything from 6 to 18 months.

Both Lip Blush and Lip Filler are performed once the lips have been numbed with anesthetic so are not considered to be painful, however you may experience soreness, bruising and throbbing and therefore are similar in that respect.

In addition, you must not workout for 24 hours after both procedures. I will discuss the Lip Blush aftercare in more detail in another article. What appears to be different, is that with Lip Fillers, side effects like swelling and bruising should resolve in 3 to 4 days but it will take up to 2 weeks to see the true end result of the Lip Blush, and of course, you will require a top up at 8 weeks to complete the process and achieve true perfection. With Lip Blush lasting longer, this could give Lip Blush the advantage over Lip Fillers, but ultimately, it is down to the look you are trying to achieve!

Lip Blushing costs approximately between £250 and £400 in greater London. A reputable Artist will include an 8 week touch up within their costings. It is vital that you do attend the top up session as for perfect long lasting results. Don’t be swayed by cheaper prices. Semi-Permanent makeup is a technical skill, and a fully trained Artist will have invested heavily in his or her training to reach industry standards. Remember, nice lips aren’t cheap and cheap lips aren’t nice. See our full service details and lip blush prices here.

How Long Does Lip Blushing Take?

The whole procedure takes roughly 2 to 3 hours including numbing and consultation. You will require a patch test that should be done at least 24 hours prior to your procedure. Depending on retention, the top up session will be shorter.

How Long Does Lip Blush Take to Heal

It takes approximately 5 to 10 days for the lips to heal superficially. However, they are not truly healed until 8 weeks which is why your top up session is not scheduled before this period. At the truly healed stage, your skin will have digested the pigment fully and your lips will be closer to the colour you chose initially. At your top up, any minor adjustment to colour can be made.
